The Stroke Course will return at SIR 2024, providing a full day of in-depth stroke education. The course, which is a separate ticketed event, is designed for physicians of all experience levels who have an interest in cerebral angiography, carotid revascularization and endovascular stroke thrombectomy.
According to course organizers Venu Vadlamudi, MD, FSIR, Martin G. Radvany, MD, FSIR, and Joseph Gemmete, MD, FSIR, those who are new to the stroke field can expect a comprehensive review of stroke pathophysiology, as well as current guidelines and techniques for stroke treatment. For those experienced in stroke interventions, the Stroke Course will provide updates on data, trials and techniques. All participants will have the opportunity to interact with peers and experienced faculty to gain the most from their experience.
“Stroke is an ever-evolving field, and the constant is that there is always change,” said Dr. Vadlamudi. “As done previously, this year’s course will feature updates on the latest data and trials.”
Participants who complete the course can receive more than 8 hours of CME credit and will be able to discuss ischemic stroke pathophysiology, interpret acute ischemic stroke imaging studies, explain basic and advanced techniques for endovascular thrombectomy (EVT), and implement techniques for treatment of tandem carotid occlusions.
The course addresses some of the challenges of providing stroke care in the current workforce landscape, organizers said.
“Thrombectomy trials continue to push the bounds of intervention and candidacy for treatment,” said Dr. Vadlamudi. “However, in order to provide the latest care, more physicians with experience and expertise are needed.”
By providing not only the latest EVT research and guideline updates, but also sharing learning around complex and challenging cases and systems of care, the course organizers hope the continuing Stroke Course education can help increase both interest in and comfort with stroke treatments.
The organizers encourage participants to bring their questions and cases and dive into the interactive program in store for the 2024 Stroke Course.
Be sure to sign up for the 2024 SIR Stroke Course, presented Saturday, March 23 from 8 a.m.–5:30 p.m. MST at the Salt Palace Convention Center.

In September 2019, SIR published updated training guidelines for IRs performing endovascular thrombectomy to treat patients suffering from acute ischemic stroke. The training guidelines were published on the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (JVIR) website.
The training guidelines detail the cognitive and procedural skills interventional radiologists must obtain and maintain to effectively treat patients using endovascular thrombectomies, including patient diagnosis and selection; brain imaging competencies; clinical patient care before, during and after the procedure; and the ability to identify and manage complications. The new guidelines will ensure IRs stay current in the performance of this life-changing and function-saving treatment. Read the full guidelines.
