A: There is not a specific CPT code for the performance of BRTO so each individual component of the procedure should be reported with the appropriate procedure code(s). Selective venous catheterizations should be reported with the 36011 or 36012 (1st & 2nd order venous cath, respectively) or 36481 (portal vein cath). Diagnostic studies that meet the criteria to be separately reported should be assigned the appropriate venography code(s). However, there is not a CPT code that specifically describes a mesenteric venography. Unless payer guidelines instruct otherwise, appropriately documented mesenteric venography could be reported with the unlisted fluoroscopic procedure code 76496. The occlusion component of the procedure should be reported with the appropriate embolization code (37241 or 37244) depending on the clinical situation.
