International IR is getting local at the 2023 Global IR Juniors Summit on Sunday, March 5.
SIR’s Resident, Fellow and Student Section (RFS), in collaboration with the British Society of Interventional Radiology, the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe, the European Trainee Forum and the Pan Arab Interventional Radiology Society RFS committee, is hosting a global summit aimed toward expanding awareness and access to medical training abroad.
“As interventional radiology expands worldwide, there is a tremendous opportunity for trainees to share ideas, collaborate on projects and optimize training,” said summit organizers Tarig Elhakim, MD; Monica M. Matsumoto, MD; and Ayah Megahed, MS, MBBS. “The goal of the Global IR Juniors Summit is to provide a forum for fostering global IR collaboration and networking among trainees; exchanging innovative ideas; promoting IR amongst students and communities especially in regions with less exposure to IR; and ultimately bringing a positive impact on the global IR community.”
From 7–10 a.m. on Sunday, attendees will hear presentations from a diverse group of speakers about IR around the world, as well as how to collaborate across specialties and borders. In addition to representatives from collaborating societies, in recent years organizers have included speakers from across the globe, such as Tanzania, Australia, Argentina, Japan and Canada. This year, the SIR International Scholars will be involved as well.
“We have numerous incredibly active IR societies and trainee committees around the world, but there is minimal interaction between young IRs and trainees,” the organizers said. “Additionally, access to IR education and training is limited in lower-resource settings. We wanted to collaborate synergistically to develop unique programming that will provide a valuable platform for global IR education.”
By communicating across borders and connecting local experiences, organizers hope to improve access IR, as well as education and training, such as by encouraging medical students to take on electives abroad. However, the programming is not reserved specifically for medical students or RFS members.
“Medical students and IR trainees will have a lot to take away from the programming, but we believe everyone—IR educators, or anyone interested in global health, regardless of career stage, can learn something from the Summit,” organizers said.
In addition to education and community, the Summit will also enable networking.
“Since the Summit has speakers from all over the world and will be in a more casual setting, there will be opportunities to meet each other throughout the morning for those who attend in person,” said organizers. “Furthermore, a lot of contact information and opportunities for further involvement are usually shared during the Summit, so those online can also benefit.”
