The Society of Interventional Radiology is about to enter an exciting season of education, celebration and connection. As we prepare to mark 50 years of IR growth, we are committed to developing a dynamic, future-looking approach to ensure the vitality of the specialty for years to come. As a result, we are redesigning sirweb.org, updating some existing resources, providing new education opportunities, and planning an Annual Scientific Meeting that celebrates 50 years of innovation.
Fibroid fix update
In July, SIR issued an updated version of the Fibroid Fix report, which highlights new data about fibroid and UFE awareness obtained through a recent Harris Poll commissioned by the society. This report includes new patient essays and will allow SIR to further spotlight the benefits of UFE over hysterectomy and other fi broid treatments. We thank the Women’s Health Council for advancing this initiative and to John Lipman, MD, FSIR, and Nicole Lamparello, MD, for connecting us with their patients, who have been so generous in sharing their stories with the public.
Educational Content Life Cycle
Keeping pace with the rapid and innovative growth of interventional radiology, SIR has developed an organized approach to provide comprehensive and up-to-date education. The Educational Content Life Cycle ensures life-long professional development of interventional radiologists and fosters the continuous evolution of IR as a specialty. Educational content is designed to be comprehensive, coordinated and longitudinal. A curriculum-based approach with basic- to expert-level materials meets the needs of interventional radiologists at various stages in their career from student and trainee level to late career. Similarly, content delivery embraces various formats that are most appropriate to the education material and its intended audience. Content and delivery formats prioritize enhancement of skills, promotion of progress and audience engagement. The life cycle of the educational content is a continuum that is in constant evolution to meet the changing needs of interventional radiologists and the IR specialty. Through the cooperative efforts of the clinical specialty councils, divisions, special interest groups and sections, the Education Advisory Council is excited for the opportunity to provide a coordinated delivery of content that enables interventional radiologists to follow a curated pathway to meet their individual education needs.
SIR EDGE
In October, SIR is launching a new in-person meeting that prioritizes highly targeted education on yttrium-90 and transarterial radioembolization; peripheral vascular disease; musculoskeletal embolization and pain management; and portal hypertension. Over 3 days, participants can gain 20 CME credits while collaborating with peers, participating in faculty-led special skills sessions, undergoing interactive learning experiences and staying up to date with the latest technique and device innovations.
According to one of the program directors, Brian Funaki, MD, FSIR, EDGE will be a high-level, focused, practical and fast-paced meeting geared toward practicing IRs, presented by the leading authorities.
“EDGE is a uniquely condensed palette of high-interest IR: practice, practice building, data-based decisions, and unique technical ‘Special Skills’ sessions to put new tech into your hands and bridge that gap from ‘saw it at a show’ to ‘saw it and start using it in my lab’,” said program co-director Ziv J Haskal, MD, FSIR.
2025 Annual Scientific Meeting
The 2025 Annual Scientific Meeting in Nashville will not only be a hub for education and connection but will be the nexus of SIR’s 50th anniversary celebrations. There will be special events, sessions and opportunities planned for participants to join the celebrations while reflecting on the history of IR and looking toward the future.
“I’m very excited for SIR 2025, not just to celebrate the society’s 50th anniversary, but to reflect on how relevant and innovative IR research has been over the last 50 years,” said SIR 2025 Annual Scientific Meeting Program Chair Gloria M. Martinez-Salazar, MD, FSIR. “We’re not just celebrating the society, but how IR has evolved to be a specialty that is embedded in every aspect of medical care, from the hospital to outpatient practices.”
Registration for SIR 2025 opens in October. Be sure to watch your email or visit sirmeeting.org to stay up to date on announcements.
